Back Injuries

Upper and Lower Back Pain

Aching and stiffness in these muscles and joints can arise for many reasons. The most common causes are muscular irritation as a result of  joint dysfunction. Upper and Lower Back Pain can often be traced to an accident or trauma, even one that occurred many years previously. Symptoms include pain, weakness, numbness and or tingling. By taking a careful history and examination of the structures involved, we can determine the best treatment fast and effectively. Treatments include manual manipulations to reduce sources of pain due to the release of nerve involvement, and techniques to avoid future episodes of back pain.

Spine Injuries

Usually as a result of trauma, this needs to be checked out quickly so as to avoid further damage and delayed recovery. It might just involve the muscles but there could be bone and nerve injury. Symptoms of spine injuries may include loss of movement. Pain, loss of sensation, weakness, or an intense stinging sensation should be seen sooner rather than later so the problem can be diagnosed quickly for a better outcome.

Our team are here to help, so do not wait, especially if in severe pain, as it could be a medical emergency. Osteopathic intervention can help, but the extent of the injury and the different structures involved must be accurately assessed first by the team before any form of treatment can be recommended.

Lumbago

Defined as mild to severe pain or discomfort in the area of the lower back due to muscle sprains. If you think that you have this and want to know why or if anything can be done to alleviate it, then come in and see us.

Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain can be caused by inflammation in the shoulder joint as well as damage to the surrounding tendons, ligaments or muscles. It can arise directly from the joint and its related structures or be a referred pain from the neck or structures in the arm. Treatment is effective when the origin is diagnosed correctly.

Frozen Shoulder

Or adhesive capsulitis as the name suggests is a restriction of movement at the shoulder joint. The two main symptoms are pain and persistent stiffness in the shoulder joint. Frozen shoulder can be quite debilitating at its worst and it is our advice is to treat it early. Manipulation treatments to your shoulder joint will act to loosen up your soft tissues, reduce the stiffness, and pain and increase the range of movement.

Ankylosing Spondylitis

A chronic condition which affects the joints causing stiffness and postural changes. This inflammatory disease may also affect hips, shoulders and ribs. It requires a structured course of movement based care and advice which is extremely important, often in conjunction with allied professions and medication.

Slipped Disc

Injury to the disc where neurological effects can be caused by a change in its structure. A slipped disc can cause back pain as well as pain referring to other areas of your body. A thorough examination should be sought to reduce the effects of such injury; early treatment and advice are key to speedy recovery. Osteopathic manipulation can reduce the muscle spasm and the pressure on the nerve, cutting down the chances of recurrent injury. Some patients may require injections to relieve their symptoms and with medication etc. operations can often be avoided.

Sciatica

This is the symptom of pain in the sciatic nerve distribution in the leg caused by nerve root compression often associated with a “slipped disc”.Often a symptom in pregnant women, it can occur for many reasons. Pain is sometimes severe, associated with numbness, muscular weakness, pins and needles or tingling and difficulty in moving or standing and walking.

Osteopathic treatment is very effective, and may include massages which by relaxing muscular tissue to release pressure on the sciatic nerve can increase the space where the nerve root exits the spine.
